Mobile Anesthesia Services: What They can do for You

In the past, it was only possible to administer anesthesia in a hospital. With the technology of today, we find that there are ultra-compact anesthesia equipment options available (anesthesiologist included). This is why you now have the choice to have anesthesia brought right to the dentist's office.

This impacts both the patient and the doctor and it is all provided via a certified anesthesiologist who is literally on-call for the dentist. Typically a dentist will find an anesthesiologist they are comfortable using when they require deep anesthesia, and they will continue to use that anesthesiologist time and time again.

For Patients: What Does Mobile Anesthesia Mean for You?

What this means if you are a patient, is that you can get anesthesia above and beyond the nitrous oxide or sedating drinks a dentist might normally use. With mobile anesthesia, a professional anesthesiologist can come to the dentist office and use deep sedation anesthesia. This might be ideal for young children who cannot sit still for long periods of time, or feel uncomfortable having a dentist work on their mouths. This would most likely be caused by anxiety, but deep sedation might also be the answer for dental work that is very painful or might take a long time to complete. Remember that a mobile anesthesiologist will only come at the dentist's request and will the dentist will only use a mobile anesthesiologist if the anesthesiology methods required involve deep sedation. If not, the dentist will typically use nitrous oxide or sedating drinks to complete the procedure.

For Doctors: Is a Mobile Anesthesiologist the Answer?

For proper mobile anesthesia, a mobile anesthesiologist might turn a dentist office into an ultra-compact monitoring and anesthesia room. Most likely, this would include a sevoflurane vaporizer, a portable anesthesia machine with O2 and N2O tanks, as well as a computer propofol infusion pump. The mobile anesthesiologist will probably have options for general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The mobile anesthesiologist should furnish all drugs, supplies and anything else needed to perform the hospital grade anesthetic procedure. Remember that the mobile anesthesiologist will be certified and as a dentist you should check the mobile anesthesiologist's track record and experience. Ask to get the needed information to contact dentists the anesthesiologist has done work for in the past and give them a call.

Legally, you have every right to provide your patient with the services of a board certified physician anesthesiologist. A mobile anesthesiologist may be the answer if you need to give patients an anesthetic that goes above and beyond the resources normally located at your office. Mobile anesthesia services can help your patients feel more comfortable and help you to perform dental procedures more efficiently.
